7 Ways to Get Noticed

Subscribe

In a world of constant connectivity and insatiable appetites for information, you’d assume that getting noticed should be easier than ever.  So why do you feel a strong desire for validation and why aren’t you getting noticed more often?  Lusting over validation is very common; whether it’s healthy or not is up for grabs.  Getting validated doesn’t happen nearly as often.  Assuming you’re overall objective is to get noticed, the primary method to do so is by violating expectations.  This means doing something that others won’t see coming.  You’ll have to be different, weird, and completely willing to take risks.  The best part is that once you fully master the ability to surprise and inspire others, you can apply that skill set to many aspects of your life.   (more…)

Should I Go to Grad School?

To go or not to go?  That is the question.  Recently I made a list of my closest high school and college friends who I keep in touch with regularly.  On this list I categorized everyone by their formal education to compare how their training compares to mine, just a few years out of college.  Surprisingly, more than 70% of my friends are either currently in graduate school, or have recently graduated with a Master’s degree.  Some took to the web and got their MBA online. Does this mean I have really smart friends, or that a Master’s degree is the new undergrad?  Not necessarily.  But, what this list does tell me is that most of my friends have made the decision to go, which means many of you are probably considering the same.  So I have broken down the basic pros and cons to figure out if going to graduate school is the right thing for you. How and Why to Eat Organic

What does it mean to eat organic?  Can a person really eat 100% organic foods and is it worth it?  In my recent quest to become a healthier person I made the choice to eat more vegetarian and organic foods, without actually knowing what it meant.  I had heard enough news stories and personal accounts of the potential health benefits but I had never done the research myself.  Last week I started my adventure by buying as many organic and vegetarian foods as possible during my weekly trip to the grocery store.  You can read more about my shopping experience in my last blog post, Losing My Vegetarian Virginity.  I have bought a few books that others have recommended to encourage my growth in this area and I have watched a few documentaries.  The overwhelming message in American culture is that organic is good.  Organic is a buzz word; it’s trendy; it’s cool; it’s apparently helpful for someone, but who?  What does organic mean in real terms for the average consumer and is it worth my attention?  (more…)

The rumors are true . . . I am going veggie!  Ahhhh!  No, it isn’t that scary but it is worthy of attention.  My decision to eat vegetarian food was spawned out of a desire to eat healthier, be healthier, and feel incredibly better.  The real story is that a few important and coincidental revelations took place in my life that sparked my interest in becoming a vegetarian.

How and Why I Made the Choice

#1 – I saw the documentary Food, Inc.  Though I was horrified at the way our food industry treats animals, and on a moral stance alone I could have made this decision, that wasn’t it.  The real awakening I had was (more…)

Why I Started My Blog

I recently received an email from a college student who is working on a class project where she is analyzing blogs.  Her group is focusing on blogs that assist college graduates in finding employment and surviving in the real world.  I was flattered that she focused on my blog and she had a few great questions about how and why I got started.  I copied my responses below.  Feel free to leave any comments or contact me with any questions you may have about blogging, business, or life after college.

Why I started my blog:

Two years ago I read the book, The 4-hour Workweek by Timothy Ferriss, and it completely converted me into an Internet entrepreneur.  However, I didn’t know what kind of Internet business I wanted to start (more…)

Today I have included a promotional video for an innovative new business that has recently been opened up for everyone to use.  WebbChange was started by one of my close childhood friends, Travis Russell, who has created a new way to place value on what you find online.

Disclaimer: I never promote other sites or products unless I use them myself or fully believe that they will add value to your life.  I am not a paid endorser of WebbChange.  I am promoting this site because I genuinely believe you should check it out (more…)

Lessons from Marathon Training

A few weeks ago I outlined my Marathon Training Schedule, which I considered to be a little suicidal.  Below I’ve listed the results of the training so far and it has indeed been as difficult as expected.  To say the least, each of the runs I’ve completed could be compared to the feeling of being involved in a head-on collision going 90 miles an hour.  My body feels like I tried to kill it.  However, I have learned a few things so far that are vital to completing any race or other challenging goal you may have in your near future.  Let me know what you think in the comments below.

#1 – Breaks are Essential

If you have any desire to complete any large task, especially a marathon, you have to schedule breaks.  I use the Jeff Galloway system for my training, (more…)

Running into Transcendence

I have never discussed religious beliefs, spirituality, or any theoretical matter on this blog before, so this is a first.  Bear with me.  I’m entering uncharted territory but this is something I’ve wanted to discuss with you, my readers.  It’s a combination of my new fascination with personal development and my recurring trips to church that are keeping spiritual questions floating through my brain on a daily basis.  My goal is to open the door with this post to discuss spiritual matters in the future without alienating too much of my fan base.  If you would like to throw your two cents into the discussion you can leave a comment below or shoot me an email.  Don’t forget that you can always leave an anonymous comment if you’d like.

Lately, I’ve been battling with the idea of transcendence.  It’s one of the most theoretical and ambiguous terms I’ve ever tried to wrap my mind around.  On Tuesday nights I go to a book group with (more…)

A few months ago I discovered a blog that has been slowly but surely changing the way I think about my life.  The blog is Personal Development for Smart People by Steve Pavlina.  He also has a book by the same name, which I am now currently reading.  His blog is devoted to personal growth, conscious living, and rising above his circumstances to achieve true enlightenment.  He is radical and odd at times, but he always makes me think.  His website has more than 700 free posts that cover dozens of topics and most of them have very practical strategies for living a more conscious life.  It is because of his blog that I created my own statement of purpose (my current version is posted on the About Us page).  This is an evolving mission statement of sorts that clearly defines the kind of life I strive to live every day.  Though I have read other books and blogs about personal development, Steve Pavlina takes it to a new level that has resonated with me recently in a profound way.  I now take personal development very seriously and (more…)

I love to procrastinate whenever possible.  I find very creative ways to put off doing things I need to accomplish.  The funny thing is that I sometimes procrastinate on doing things I enjoy, as well as things I don’t.  My to-do list is always too long.  My time is always too limited.  My energy level is always too low.  My priorities are always too jumbled.  At least, these are the things I tell myself all the time, whether they are true or not.  Procrastination is a choice like anything else.  The trick is to realize when you are procrastinating and make some small changes to procrastinate more intelligently.  I’m not going to argue that you should eliminate procrastinating, because it can be very useful.  I actually believe that procrastination is a fine art and you should take the time to master it.  Sometimes you have to avoid procrastinating, and sometimes you’ll need to exploit it to your advantage.  Take a look at the ideas I’ve put together below and let me know what you think. This is one of the most powerful questions you’ll ever ask yourself.  If you take this question seriously and brainstorm all the possible adventures you could experience, it’s truly transformational.  This is one of the questions I asked myself before I decided to begin training for my current marathon.  The physical challenge of the marathon is an incredible test of my own self-discipline, endurance, and courage.  The possibility of failure is huge because I’m no where near prepared.  However, in these kinds of situations I like to break down my options and consider the worst case scenarios.  When it came down to it, the worst thing I could imagine would be (more…)

Your career is your occupation, the principal activity in your life that you do to earn money.  In a nutshell, it will take up a lot of your time.  So which occupation will you choose and, more importantly, how will you make it happen?  Take a look at the list below and picture yourself living out your dream career.  Literally envision walking in the shoes of the future successful YOU.  Try it.  Then decide what actions you will take to make that ridiculous fantasy a true reality.

1. Begin with the End in Mind

Your career goal is not your next job; it is your life’s purpose.  Think long-term.  Unfortunately, many of us get caught up in the moment and (more…)

I’ll just throw it out there, I am very impatient.  I don’t know if I’m just a product of my generation, but I hate waiting for things to happen.  I live in a fast-paced world.  I think quickly, act quickly, and expect results quickly.  Due to the demands placed on my life and the incredible demands I place on myself, patience is not one of my virtues.  I’m also rarely satisfied with what I accomplish because I only see what could have been.  There is no doubt that much of my life is focused on productivity, efficiency, effectiveness, and outcomes.  I want more than I have and I expect more than I can produce.  This is one of the double-edged swords of my life.  My ambitious attitude is both my greatest strength and my greatest weakness.

One day while driving to work and listening to one of my many podcasts I heard the quote, “there are no shortcuts to any place worth going,” and something clicked (more…)

The Necessity of Sleep

I was the king of all-nighters during my senior year of college.  I refined the art of writing 12-page research papers from start to finish in less than 8 hours and scraping together at least an A-.  The sacrifice was sleep.  I stayed up all night, most of the next day, napped a little, and then crashed the following evening.  I would maintain a constant flow of caffeine and techno music throughout the process to keep my energy and sanity just high enough to survive.  I was a functioning zombie and I made it work quite well.  However, this lifestyle came with a multitude of side effects: drowsiness, nausea, headaches, dizziness, irritability, outbursts of anger and/or tears, lack of empathy, weight gain, poor hygiene, high blood pressure, and crazy OCD.  The only reason I managed to maintain living like this for such a long time was due to the fact that every other person around me was doing the exact same thing.  It was sanity by consensus.  As long as enough of us were doing it, we weren’t crazy.  (more…)

I’ve worked in sales since the day I finished college. Every job I’ve had included sales of some form and nearly every company was terrible at it.  I sold Verizon business phone lines door-to-door, computers and iPods at Apple, debt at Citibank, food at various restaurants, foam shoes at Crocs, job candidates at High-Tech, and I’m preparing to sell my book on this site in the near future.  If you couldn’t already tell, I have had more jobs than the average 25 year-old.  Call me a job-hopper if you want but the experiences have been very enlightening, especially when it comes to sales tactics.  If you currently work in sales or are even considering it, take a look at the list below before you head out on your next sales call.  (more…)

Now that I’ve got your attention, let me explain why I really do want you to get silly wasted, or the equivalent in other means if you choose.  If your college experience was anything like mine it probably consisted of excessive amounts of cheap beer, late nights, few trips to the gym, and many impulsive decisions that you later regretted when the pictures where posted on Facebook.  As much fun as this lifestyle can be, it doesn’t necessarily prepare you for the intense demands of employers, spouses, or even parents.  Accomplishing your goals during life after college can seem daunting, especially if you’re thrown out on your own without a guide.  I’ve listed some of the most important actions you need to take as you head out into the real world.  Even if you’ve been graduated for years, these action steps can be a good check-up to see how you’ve been doing.

When I graduated college and moved to Boston, I had accomplished nine out of these ten steps within the first few months.  I’m not offering this advice because it sounds like a good idea.  I’m talking about this stuff because I did these things and they work.  If you’ve been struggling with finding your passion (more…)

I am super type A.  Personality tests tell me to see a doctor.  My OCD is mild, but very apparent if you watch me work.  My wife catches me talking to myself constantly, but she has gotten used to it.  If you leave me alone in a room with a to-do list on a post-it note, I will build a spaceship out of toothpicks.  Maybe I’m exaggerating a little, but I do put my quirks to good use.  I spend much of my time finding ways to create more time.  I focus a lot of my energy on productivity, effective habits, and useful ways to make my day more efficient.  If you’re anything like me, you’re busy.  Busy people need more time.  From my own experience, if I successfully create more time I usually fill it with more stuff instead of meaningful activity.  I don’t want you to take these strategies and simply make yourself busier.  Focus on making your life more meaningful by filling your time with activities that enlighten your mind, stimulate your senses, and simply make you feel more alive.  (more…)

I love the fact that many challenges in life have very simple solutions.  Becoming wealthy is one of those challenges.  I’ll break down the basics of what it takes to get rich and you’ll see very quickly that it’s not as complicated as you thought.  It will be hard to achieve, but it’s easy to understand the process.

How to Become Wealthy

1. Maximize Your Income
2. Minimize Your Expenses

Seems simple enough, make a lot of money and don’t spend a bunch of money.  You’re probably thinking that spending less seems easier than making a lot.  I’d agree with you at first, but most people I know are very talented spenders, including myself.  I don’t keep cash in my wallet for one reason, I’ll spend it.  It’s harder for me personally to spend money on my debit card but for whatever reason I throw cash around like I have an endless supply.  You may struggle with making cash or even with spending it, but let’s explore how to get rich in the most simplistic way. Why Getting Fired is a Blessing

Getting fired was one of the scariest things I could imagine when I entered the job market fresh out of college.  I feared having to explain to a future employer why I sucked at my last job so badly that a security guard had to throw me off their property.  I feared having to fill out an application and check the box that asks if you’ve ever been fired or asked to resign, and then having to list the reason.  I thought getting fired would somehow put me on a public “Do-Not-Hire” list and I’d be banned from employment forever.  I imagined only being able to work as a janitor or simply giving up with no possibility of a future.  Scary stuff.  (more…)

Your First Real World Job 101

I’m poking my head out of hibernation to write this blog post.  Back in December I suspended my blogging to work on my book, which is chugging along.  I’ll give you a quick update.  First, writing a book is about as difficult as any other enormous goal, it’s always harder than you originally hoped.  I have, however, converted my sole proprietorship into an LLC.  I also recently opened my first business bank account and setup my account with the company that will help me self-publish the book.  Additionally, I’ve written the first 3 chapters and outlined the remaining chapters.  It’s a challenge to write a book while maintaining a full-time job, a personal life, and training for another marathon, but somehow it’s all coming together.  Patience is truly a virtue, and I haven’t mastered it yet.  (more…)
