That’s right, 24 beers (or more) every week. Will it make you healthy? No. Will it make you look like the girl in the picture? Doubtful. Will it taste great for four consecutive years during college? Of course! That’s exactly what I did then, but it’s not quite what I’m up to now. Getting healthy is really about two things: feeling great and making great choices. Sometimes those two overlap and sometimes they don’t. In other words, sometimes the best medicine to feel better could be eating horribly unhealthy food and drinking tons of booze. Most of the time it will only make you hungover and dreading to ever repeat that again. What I have done since college is a complete reversal from my undergrad days. I have lost a lot of weight, radically changed my diet, and I now exercise like a madman. Do I regret my four years of trashing my body? Not at all. It was the best lesson I could have learned. A textbook could have told me that 24 beers a week is a bad decision, but I had to live the experience to fully (more…)

Every morning I wake up and drink at least one liter of water before I do anything else. I then practice yoga, read for 15-30 minutes, make my bed, and eat fresh fruit for breakfast. These are simple activities that I never used to do on cue. Now these success habits are a part of my daily regiment. I used to chug coffee, check my email, and search Facebook for up to an hour before I forced myself to get ready for work at the last minute. My new habits are much more peaceful, energizing, and uplifting.

Success always starts with your thoughts and your thoughts are more habitual than you might realize. If you go to the same job or class 5 days a week, hang out with the same friends every weekend, and participate in the same activities every season, you may be unconsciously putting yourself into a thought rut. The only way to get out of a thought rut is to create new thoughts. In other words, expose yourself to (more…)

Entering the real world is equivalent to one big choice, taking a big risk or playing it safe. Moving to Boston was my big risk. I was facing a choice that many college seniors and recent grads face, moving to a new city or moving back home. Though I made more mistakes than I can count in my big move, it was the best decision I could have made. Taking risks puts you on the fast track to learning more about yourself, the world around you, and what your real options are for success.

Take a look into Chapter 2 – My Story, taken directly from my new eBook, Graduated And Clueless. Leave a comment below and let me know what happened as you left college and took a big jump into reality. (more…)

What’s the first step to making some real money after college? No, getting a random job is not the answer. (Side note: I will say that it’s amazing how many grads jump from school into a random job simply because that’s what everyone else is doing. And yes, that’s what I did and I don’t necessarily recommend it.)  If you are serious about making money after graduation you need to take the first logical step, learn about money. That’s it. Begin by teaching yourself everything you possibly can about how super-wealthy people make money. My recommendation? Buy and read at least 5 finance books, cover-to-cover, and study the ultra-successful movers and shakers in the business world. Take time out of your day to figure out everything  you don’t know. I learned very quickly that there are people who decide to make money and (more…)

Welcome to the 12-part series that will unveil an excerpt from each of the chapters in my new book, Graduated And Clueless. The first part comes directly from Chapter 7: Lifestyle Design. I decided to devote an entire chapter in the book to this topic because it is so vital to success after college. Structure is the name of the game when it comes to life as a student. Almost everything is decided ahead of time for you and all you have to do is follow the leader. Post-graduation, you can essentially forget structure. It doesn’t exist in the traditional sense. Unless you find yourself in a 9-5 job, which is quickly disappearing from many companies, structure is left up to you. From daily schedules to long-term financial planning, the formula for your life is now completely in your hands. If you don’t like what you’re doing, you have the opportunity to change and do whatever you want. It’s a ton of freedom paired with immense responsibility.

Take a look below at an excerpt from Chapter 7 – Lifestyle Design, taken directly from my new eBook, Graduated And Clueless. Let me know in the comments what kind of life formula described your childhood. Even better, let me know what life formula you have planned for your super-successful life after college. (more…)

The rumors are true. The book is coming. After more than 18 months of brainstorming, writing, and re-writing, the eBook is finally coming to fruition. I have not written a blog post in nearly three months and the result of my absence from the blogosphere is this new creation. I’m getting super pumped about this and I hope you are too! This book is going to change the face of college graduation for many people and I hope you are one of them, even if college was many years ago. This is a guest post from GreekForMe.com

Your family, college professors, and internships do their best to help you get a healthy dose of the working world before you actually have to spend 9-5 in a cubicle, but we all know that the best preparation is well, living it! All of us here at GreekForMe.com love being able to work with AKA Paraphernalia and all of our Greek merchandise, but entering the “real world” of having a full-time job isn’t easy, and with the economy as it is, companies often have no choice but to pile on the tasks to their understaffed workforce. Rather than succumbing to your stress, eat it away the vegan way! We don’t mean hitting the fried foods drive-thru; instead choosing foods that can actually help calm you, ease your stress away, and are actually healthy.

Are you happy in your life?  How can you become happier?

You don’t achieve happiness in life or at work by accident.  Those who achieve happiness at work and in life in general know that happiness is an internal feeling and that it comes from the inside.  They also know that the happiest people are the ones who know what they must do and take action to achieve whatever they want in life.

Since you know now that happiness is an internal emotion, you must know that there are qualities that will enhance your life and work.  It is time to change some of your daily practices and your feelings, so you can be happier.  If you become happier in life, chances are you will become (more…)

If you were to add up exactly how much time you spend doing each activity throughout your day, what would it say about you? What would it say about your goals for the future? I can easily predict that my future would be filled with lots of eating, little sleeping, and enormous amounts of Facebook stalking. When it comes to growth, and especially the accomplishment of goals, every single day is extremely important. One of the most effective strategies to create the life you want is to acquire only the essential knowledge, the most vital information, and nothing more. It doesn’t matter what you are trying to do. If you spend 8 hours a day preparing for a piano concert by watching historical documentaries about President Lincoln, needless to say, the information may be fascinating but it is completely useless in this situation. This example may sound extreme but every time you do something that doesn’t bring you one step closer to your goals, you are wasting precious time.

How to Learn What Matters (and ignore what doesn’t)

The Pareto Principle - Otherwise known as the 80/20 Rule, Pareto’s Law, law of the vital few, and the principle of factor sparsity – the Pareto Principle states that 80% of the (more…)

New Year’s Resolutions are lame. Americans, on average, give up on their resolutions by January 4th! Sad. Very sad. This year, scrap the resolutions and do something significant. I have created a list of 5 One-Time Fixes, or temporary motivational boosts that can get you started in the right direction. I have also included 5 Powerful Habits, which are the focal point of real, tangible progress.  Habits create long-term success and can transform you into the rock star you want to be by this time again next year. If you have tried and failed in the past, this year will be exactly the same unless you make emotionally-invested radical changes. The only way to make this year different is to get in touch with what you really want out of life. If you love smoking cigarettes and working a meaningless job, you will never quit either of them. If your job is just okay and smoking isn’t that big of deal, you will (more…)

Over the last few weeks I have found myself in unfamiliar territory, lacking any sense of creativity, inspiration, or extreme passion. I have been slow, mellow, and even bored. It is uncharacteristic of me to not be on the edge of my seat 24/7, pounding my next double espresso and trying desperately to slow down my speech so anyone can understand my over-caffeinated babbling. I tried something new recently, which I have done before but with slightly different results. I called off all forms of caffeine. I quit drinking coffee and instead I now consume mass amounts of spring water. I’m doing a small trial before I go all in, 100% raw for 30 days straight. 100% raw means no cooked food; specifically, no food cooked above 118 degrees Fahrenheit. This includes hot coffee, tea, hot chocolate, oatmeal, and even bread. Although, I have found raw sprouted bread, which I will be eating quite a bit of very soon.

It’s an interesting experience without the caffeine. Life is slower, easier, less exciting, less stressful, more methodical, more tangible. It’s as though caffeine was (more…)

I have always promoted reading as the foremost method of gaining insightful knowledge that will radically change your life. The reality is that I am motivated to change by facts. Information is very powerful no matter what form it comes in. I am a seeker of the truth in all things and, therefore, I do my best to learn in every way possible. I look for new perspectives on events, culture, people, and systems that affect the world I live in today. The documentaries I have listed below are potentially life changing and that is why I highly recommend them. I will warn you in saying that each film is inherently biased, yet each has principles that are timeless and amazingly transformative. Watch, learn, and be inspired. (more…)

How can doing less actually allow us to accomplish more?  After starting a new job and running two marathons this month, I feel as though I have begun to understand how a minimalist can function more efficiently than the rest of us.  During the month of October I made the decision to put my efforts into two distinct goals: mastering my new job and successfully crossing the finish line at my first ultramarathon.  You may have noticed that I did not focus on writing, as this is my first post in over a month.

The new job is still a work in progress, but there’s no doubt I have transformed the way I function in the office.  I am more focused, attentive to detail, and busier than ever from the moment I walk in the door to the moment I leave.  My productivity has skyrocketed to the point that I can squeeze more out of every day than I ever thought possible.  My energy is consistently higher than normal and I think about ways to improve my work day nearly 24/7.  I am more involved in my company and I have devoted more of myself to the work that I do.

I ran the Twin Cities Marathon in Minnesota earlier this month and set a personal record by nearly 30 minutes.  I also recovered faster than ever and (more…)

How much time do you spend on activities that enhance your life? Brian Tracy, entrepreneur and self-made millionaire, coined the term for the EvE Ratio, which is the amount of time (and money) a person spends on Entertainment vs. Education.  According to Brian, the average person spends 50 minutes on entertainment for every 1 minute spent on education and personal growth.  50:1, that’s a sad number!  If you want to find one of the fastest ways to increase your growth and begin to build an empire, it’s time to decrease your ratio and increase your action!

The First Switch

Reduce entertainment and increase education.  This may be the most difficult part if you’re used to drowning yourself in entertainment every day of the week.  To be more clear, when I refer to entertainment (more…)

On Sunday, October 3rd, 2010, I will be running my 2nd marathon in Minneapolis & St. Paul, Minnesota.  The Twin Cities Marathon is a full 26.2 miles of glory!  I’ve been training like a mad man for the last couple months.  Thanks to my new vegan diet and my 20-mile runs on Sunday mornings I have lost more than 20 pounds since April and I feel better than ever!  This run is a huge test to see if my diet and my training schedule were planned intelligently enough to handle the intensity of the run.  At the moment no bones are broken and nothing is too sore that I can’t handle the race.  Of course, now that I said that something may happen, but my glass with a green smoothy is more than half full.  By the way, in case you read my last blog post, running is an example of something I do almost every day because it is an activity that always makes me feel better about myself. It’s invigorating, empowering, and gets me real jacked up.

FYI, I’ll also be running my first ultramarathon, the Nashville Ultramarathon just two weeks after the Twin Cities Marathon.  I’m running the 50 kilometer route, which is about 31.07 miles.  This race is the ultimate test for me to see if I have what it takes to be an super endurance athlete.  If this ultra goes well, you can bet I’ll be signing up for a 50-mile race soon after.  I’ll hold off the 100-mile trail runs for now, but that’s probably not too far away.  Think I’m crazy?  Maybe a little, but this is what I live for and it’s awesome!

If you’re interested in running a marathon and have any questions just leave a comment below and I’ll be happy to help out.  Thanks guys! (more…)
