That’s right, 24 beers (or more) every week. Will it make you healthy? No. Will it make you look like the girl in the picture? Doubtful. Will it taste great for four consecutive years during college? Of course! That’s exactly what I did then, but it’s not quite what I’m up to now. Getting healthy is really about two things: feeling great and making great choices. Sometimes those two overlap and sometimes they don’t. In other words, sometimes the best medicine to feel better could be eating horribly unhealthy food and drinking tons of booze. Most of the time it will only make you hungover and dreading to ever repeat that again. What I have done since college is a complete reversal from my undergrad days. I have lost a lot of weight, radically changed my diet, and I now exercise like a madman. Do I regret my four years of trashing my body? Not at all. It was the best lesson I could have learned. A textbook could have told me that 24 beers a week is a bad decision, but I had to live the experience to fully comprehend it in my own life.
Take a look below at an excerpt from Chapter 11 – Your Health Revolution, taken directly from my new eBook, Graduated And Clueless.
It was six months after I graduated from college when I visited Dr. Donald Delwood for my annual physical. His first question was nothing less than revealing, “So Jeff, are you still on the 24 beers-a-week diet?” The question was funny but it was at that moment I realized something had changed. The old Jeff Sanders would have smiled, nodded, and agreed that I was still drinking heavily three to four nights a week with little thought to how my lifestyle was literally killing me. The old Jeff Sanders would have left that doctor’s appointment thinking that his physician was in touch with college students and that he, at one time, did the exact same thing. Fortunately, the new Jeff Sanders was a little smarter and beginning to connect the dots between lifestyle choices and health. The new Jeff Sanders was no longer on the 24 beers-a-week diet, though he could have promoted that lifestyle with another book and made quite a bit of money! The new Jeff Sanders was drinking less, sleeping more, and exercising like his life depended on it.
No Secrets
It is no secret that exceptionally healthy people are energetic, successful, and overwhelming joyful, while unhealthy people suffer from all sorts of mental and physical ailments. Healthy people are busier, get more accomplished, and are often richer than their sick counterparts. Richard Branson, the billionaire media mogul who created the Virgin brand, was asked about his secret to productivity and success. His response, “exercise.” Creating your own health revolution has little to do with where you are today because it has everything to do with what you are willing to sacrifice for a better tomorrow.
It is no secret that Americans are unhealthy and their health care system is dying. As Dr. T. Colin Campbell outlined in his best-selling book on health, The China Study, nearly 50% of all Americans will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and two-thirds of all Americans are overweight or obese. Additionally, the third leading cause of death in America is medical care! 225,000 people die every year due to errors made by medical professionals and the drugs they prescribe. On top of that, the US spends more than double what other industrial countries spend on health care and yet, the American health care system is ranked 37th in the world. Lesson learned: we spend a lot of money and have nothing to show for it. Our medical system focuses on treatment of disease instead of prevention. Lifestyle diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, and stroke, are largely preventable with simple dietary changes and a little exercise. Isn’t it ironic that doctors prescribe pills instead of food? Or recommend surgery instead of working out? It seems that the methods we have been using are out of touch with natural remedies that have more power than we give credit.
