The Social Media Revolution

We are now in the midst of a Social Media Revolution.  Duh.  This blog post is not meant to shock you.  The video has enough stats to blow your mind, especially how Facebook has grown faster than the Telephone, Radio, or TV.  The vast majority of you out there reading this blog are members of Gen Y.  You’re fully aware of social media and it’s presence in our world.  I remember our family getting our first computer when I was a kid, and I remember waiting in anticipation for Facebook to spread across the county to my University.  The point is that social media is everywhere now, and will only continue to spread in awesome new ways in the future.

Most of you use social media as a communication and entertainment vehicle.  You connect with friends through Facebook more often than in person, you look at pictures online instead of developing old school cameras, you watch TV shows on Hulu instead of an actual television, you do research on Wikipedia instead of in the library, you find directions on your iPhone instead of stopping at the nearest gas station.  You get the point.  The not-so-obvious revolution that’s going on here is that children today are growing up with social media as a natural part of life.  First graders have laptops.  Fifth graders have iPhones.  High School students spend more time on MySpace and Facebook than playing sports or going to the movies.  Change is here.

So, What Can You Do With It?

This question has been running though my mind more often recently because I am an entrepreneur.  I have a business that I want to share with the world and it only seems natural to jump on the latest and greatest of what the world seems to focus on and use every day.  As a business owner and blogger I want to share my thoughts, insights, and revolutions with the world.  Fortunately, because of technologies like the Internet, iPhones, WordPress, and Facebook, I’m able to share my message very quickly and easily.

Social Media is an Opportunity

Social media encompasses an enormous number of businesses, technologies, and opportunities.  Learning to see those opportunities could become you greatest single asset in the near future.  Because of social media you have nearly unlimited resources to discover your passion, find a new career, connect with complete strangers, start a business, learn about anything, and explore the entire world from your computer.  Think about it.  If you’re struggling right now with how to pay your bills, where you should work, what career path is best for you, what city you should move to, how to start a business, how to get out of debt, or how to discover you life’s calling, you have an enormous wealth of power because of social media.  You can find the people, information, and resources you need to solve nearly any problem.

Recently, I finished reading Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki.  First of all, this book is fantastic.  Secondly, one point the author makes is that those who are most successful in life are the ones who are able to see opportunities and act upon them immediately.  Great wealth is acquired by simply playing the game of life better than those around you by seizing opportunities others miss.  Social media is an extremely powerful opportunity if you can harness its potential.  If you have set big goals in your life and find yourself struggling to make progress, or even get started, consider using social media as a tool for your own success.  I use social media constantly to achieve this goal by connecting with old friends, new customers, family, co-workers, and complete strangers as I build my online presence and find new ways to grow and learn.

How Are You Using Social Media?

Let me know how social media impacts your life.  How do you use it?  When do you use it?  Is social media important to you?  Is it annoying?  Is it awesome?  Does anything I said make any sense?  Just hit me up with some feedback and let’s start the conversation.  I’m curious to know if I’m alone on an island here or if others understand what I mean.
