Welcome to the premiere blog of Graduated And Clueless! This entire website has been developed with the intent to shed some light on the trials and tribulations of entering the real world. Whether you’re a recent graduate who’s just left the protective nest of your parents (or the college “bubble”) or you’ve found yourself in a precarious life position that has left you completely overwhelmed, this site is here to help.
For a more formal introduction, my name is Jeff Sanders, my business partner and wife’s name is Tessa, and you can read our entire bios in the About Us section of the site. To briefly summarize who we are and why we’ve created Graduated And Clueless, let me begin by giving a little backstory. The two of us went to different colleges in the Midwest and after graduation we decided to move together to Boston for Tessa to get her Master’s. In a matter of weeks, Tessa and I found ourselves struggling to make ends meet. We had no money, no insurance (except what little our parents coverage extended to us), I was working 2 jobs at 70+ hours per week, and Tessa was working a full-time internship on top of her full-time class load. Now, from our perspective we knew were in deep trouble. Not only was life challenging us from every angle but we felt like we weren’t making any traction. Our bank accounts in no way reflected the long hours and extremely hard work we were putting in every week and because of the long hours we lost the time we desired to socialize with anyone.
Alone, broke, and exhausted, Tessa and I knew something had to give. Though our careers seemed to be heading no where fast and there was no money to be found, we began to spend what little free time we had discussing how we had found ourselves in this position. Having left the blissful world of college with our chests puffed full of arrogance and our heads filled with knowledge, we thought we were ready to ENTER THE REAL WORLD! Wrong. We weren’t. We had no idea what we were doing. Every day became a guessing game instead of a cleanly calculated game of cat and mouse, which is how college often felt. We knew it was time to get organized. We knew we needed a new plan, a new set of realistic goals that could allow us to learn the jargon of the real world and how we could best position ourselves for unlimited success. That is what this blog is all about. This is an opportunity for us to share with you the lessons we’ve learned from scratch, the hard way.
Now, I don’t want to sound like one of those old men who tells you the story of how he walked to school in the snow, up hill both ways. But really, I walked over 2 miles to-and-from work in Boston, most often in the snow, rain, ice, and heavy traffic. Public transportation was slow and extremely unsanitary, not to mention driving and parking a car was more expensive than owning a home! So, I walked. I’m not telling this story so you can throw me a pity party. I’m telling this story to shine a little perspective on the motivation I had to get myself out of that situation. I never want to return to a lifestyle where I’m forced to walk 2 miles in the snow to work. Fortunately, I don’t have to anymore, and I don’t have to because of a series of smart decisions Tessa and I made to completely transform our lives.
To say our lives are perfect today would be a complete lie. Our lives are not perfect and they never will be. However, we have made some great choices and discovered some wonderful helpful hints along the way that we believe can truly benefit your life. Check back often as we will be continuously updating this site with new tips, tricks, and helpful hints that should allow you to feel a little less clueless.
